Preserving Local Heritage

May 11, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

There are more cranes in Toronto than any other city in North America. Not even New York has seen this level of rapid construction. While many people are happy to see densification in the city, we don’t want to lose the essence of Toronto. In addition to planning developments so neighbourhoods are walkable, accessible, and vibrant, it is important to maintain some history.

Many Torontonians will remember fondly the sign from “Sam the Record Man”.  While the sign was salvaged with a promise to be displayed as part of our heritage, a decade later, few people are aware of its whereabouts. The imminent loss of Honest Ed’s will deprive the city of a little bit of history too. Once these structures are gone, they are lost forever. One example is the loss of Trinity College in what is now Trinity Bellwoods park.

How do we define which spaces have architectural, cultural, or civic value? How do we balance our desire to preserve history with our rapidly changing development needs? Is there value to hanging onto the past or should we only look forward as society rapidly changes?

Join us on May 11 as we welcome some very special guests to discuss how we can look into the past to help build the future. We’ll be joined by:

– Tamara Anson-Cartwright is a Program Manager for Heritage Preservation Services at the City of Toronto and is working on the Eglinton-Yonge study as part of the City’s Planning Department.

– Lynne D. DiStefano is a Professor and Co-Founder of the Architectural Conservation Programmes at the University of Hong Kong. She previously taught at the University of Western Ontario and has been extensively involved with UNESCO’s efforts in heritage 4conservation.

– Alex Josephson is a Co-Founder of PARTISANS and a lecturer at the University of Toronto’s Daniels Faculty of Architecture.

We will be at our uptown location, The Rose and Crown, at 2335 Yonge Street. Doors open at 7:00 and the discussion starts promptly at 7:30pm. As always, this event is free, you just have to pay for what you order.

Venue has been moved to the Madison Avenue Pub (14 Madison Avenue).  Doors till open at 7pm! We will be on the first floor!

Please RSVP to let us know you will be joining us.
