Privatizing Hydro One

May 19, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Hydro one, once considered a strategic asset is now up on the auctioning block. During this time of financial stress our government is considering this sale as a source of revenue. While it may provide a large one time payment and potentially save us from a tax hike, we should consider the full implications of the sale. Will we get a fair price? Will taxes nevertheless have to be raised to support our social programs? How do we expect service to change under the new arrangement? Why does the government believe this is a good deal for Ontarians? Perhaps it is time we took a closer look at the advantages of Ontario selling some ownership of assets with steady returns while maintaining overall control of the system.

On May 19th, Richard Carlson, Senior Energy Policy Associate from the Mowat Centre, Brady Yauch, economist and the Executive Director of Consumer Policy Institute, and Venai Raniga, CUPE’s Ontario Policy and Legislation Researcher, will be joining us to discuss the ramifications of selling Hydro One.  Join us at the Wind Up Bird at 382 College St (College and Borden, just West of Spadina). Be sure to try out some delicious creations by their award winning chef.  Restaurant will be open from 6:30 onwards if you’d like to come early to get dinner beforehand.  Discussion begins promptly at 7:30pm as usual ending at 9pm.

Please RSVP to let us know you are coming!
