Basic Income: Ontario’s Pilot Project

July 17, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Ontario is embarking on a pilot project to test the effectiveness of the Basic Income Guarantee, a form of social assistance in which recipients receive an unconditional sum of money.

The persistence of poverty, rising wealth inequality, and a changing job market are some of the drivers behind the renewed interest in basic income schemes. Even Silicon Valley has started to advocate for basic income as they see their technologies replacing a lot of paid human work in the near future, faster than we can create new jobs.

After tabling a motion in the Senate to test Basic Income, Senator Art Eggleton is about to see this project finally take flight. Senator Eggleton and Dr. Stephen Chen, Associate Professor of Information Technology at York University, will be joining us to lead a discussion on the need for, and expected outcomes of this Basic Income pilot.

We will be at the Madison Avenue Pub on July 17. Doors open at 7:00pm, and the discussion starts promptly at 7:30pm.

As always, our events are free, you only have to pay for what you order.

Please RSVP to let us know you can join us.
