Carbon Pricing – Helpful or Harmful?

August 17, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

With Federal elections fast approaching, WSIC is taking a closer look at an important issue with a national impact: the environment.

Many citizens argue that the state of the environment has taken a back seat under our current government, which operates under the belief that what is good for the economy and the environment are mutually exclusive.  On the other hand, we have examples like China where the cost of neglecting the environment is now causing drastic changes in people’s lives. During the Olympics factories were forced to shut down to help improve air quality at the cost of salaries and production.

In Canada, blessed with an abundance of natural resources, our economy has largely been built on exploiting them. However, even Alberta, the cradle of Canada’s resource extraction, has elected a progressive government intent on taxing carbon. What would a national tax on carbon do to regional economies and are there better alternatives?

Join us on August 17th at our NEW venue – The Madison Avenue Pub (14 Madison Avenue) – for a discussion and debate on carbon pricing and its alternatives. Guest speakers for the evening are Brian Foody, CEO of Iogen, and Yannick Trottier, co-founder of Spectral Applied Research and member of the Climate Reality Project.

Please RSVP to let us know you can join us.
