Electoral Reform – Australia’s Experience

October 14, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

The federal election is right around the corner, however, previous elections have witnessed diminishing voter turnout.

It has been argued that Canada’s current electoral system leads to strategic voting,  youth abstention,  and a high percentage of “wasted votes”. Some experts argue that our current electoral system even leads to a lack of diversity and under representation of women and ethnic minorities.

Various municipalities are exploring the option of using ranked ballots in  their elections. Do we also need to overhaul the federal electoral system? Can changing Canada’s electoral system lead to a more fair, engaged and representative democracy?

Join us on October 14 as we welcome two special guests who will discuss this timely topic. Antony Green, an Election Analyst for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, will discuss the unique Australian context, while Dr. Dennis Pilon, Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science at York University, and academic expert from Fair Vote Toronto, will discuss the Canadian context and opportunities for the future

We will be at our uptown location, The Rose and Crown Pub, at 2335 Yonge Street (at Eglinton). Doors open for informal networking at 7:00pm and the discussion starts promptly at 7:30pm. As always, this event is free, you just have to pay for what you order. Please RSVP to let us know you will be joining us.
