Giving MPs more freedom

September 8, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Michael MacMillan makes the case that Canada’s democracy is failing in his new book “Tragedy in the Commons” co-authored by Alison Loat. They speak with 80 former MPs on their experiences in government and candidly discusses what barriers they faced in representing their constituents. Loat and MacMillan set out seven “tragedies” in the way the House of Commons currently gets staffed and operates and how it is becoming detrimental to the democratic process.  This tragedy is shown to cross all party lines.

Current MP for Wellington-Halton Hills Michael Chong has crafted a private members bill (the Reform Act) to give more power to MPs over holding the party leadership accountable. Chong states that “it restores local control over party nominations, mandates caucus votes for the election of caucus chairs and the expulsion of caucus members, and defines the rules for the review of the party leader by caucus.”  By removing some power from the Prime Minister’s office and putting it back into the local level, Chong feels that the Westminster system can once again represent the interests of Canadians.

WSIC is excited to host both as our speakers at 7:30pm on Monday September 8th at the Duke of York to lead our discussion on federal politics, power and changes that the public need to play a role in.
