Is there Value to a Diversity City Council?

July 16, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Approximately 52% of Toronto’s population belong to a visible minority group and yet minorities make up only 10% of city council. Should the makeup of council better reflect the residents of this city?

What’s even more discouraging is the lack of professional background diversity. Debates like the Scarborough subway get rehashed over and over with little expertise sitting in council while expert opinions get sidelined. How do we get a broader skill set elected with a wider arrange of backgrounds? How can we ensure that our city council represents the diversity of our city?

Joining us is Hema Vyas, co-chair of Women Win Toronto, who ran to represent Ward 18, Davenport as councillor in 2010 and Darla Campbell, Former Executive Director of the Ontario Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure. They will be discussing how diversity of backgrounds, both personal and professional, can have large impacts on decision making at all levels of government.

We will meet on Monday July 16 at the Madison Avenue Pub. Doors open at 7:00pm and the discussion starts promptly at 7:30.

Please RSVP to let us know you can make it.
