Freedom of speech is the core of a true democracy – the ability to communicate ideas, criticism, and hopes without fear of persecution, prosecution, or injury. In Canada, this right is protected as a fundamental freedom. Yet government scientists have recently raised concerns about the increased interference and political pressure that’s affecting their work. Journalists are being physically attacked abroad. Rightly or wrongly, there is a limitation on free speech. Where should the line be drawn, or should there be a line at all with regards to what we’re free to say?

Join us in welcoming the Toronto Star’s Public Editor Kathy English, and Katie Gibbs, Executive Director of Evidence for Democracy, on March 4 to discuss the challenges of protecting free speech, when it’s best to stay silent, and some of the free speech-related conflicts happening in the world today.

We will be at our NEW Uptown location, The Rose and Crown at 2335 Yonge Street. Doors open at 7:00 and the discussion begins at 7:30pm as usual ending at 9pm.
