Why Should I Care about Aboriginal Justice?

July 22, 2013 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The United Nations has criticized Canada for failing on child nutrition (mostly in aboriginal communities); aboriginal schools are on average, funded 25%  less than non-native schools; and conditions in some reserves have been described as “third world”.  Living in the city, few of us understand the issues that precipitated the “Idle No More” movement or fully appreciate the impact that many of our policies have on aboriginal communities.

Dr. Carolyn Bennett has been a long time champion of aboriginal justice and has been tirelessly fighting to close the gap in school funding between native and non-native schools.  In the House of Commons, she successfully got a motion passed to create a Committee to hear testimony about missing and murdered Indigenous Women.  Todd Ross is the Aboriginal Lead at the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network and the Director of Community Development and Information Services at the Casey House. He has worked with First Nations across Ontario and is Metis.

Carolyn Bennett and Todd Ross will share their experiences and challenges in their fight for aboriginal justice and explain why these issues have implications that reach beyond the confines of the reserves.

Join us on Monday, July 22 at the Duke of York (39 Prince Arthur Ave), ask your questions and share your thoughts about Aboriginal Justice. If you just want to sit, listen, and have a drink, that’s fine too.  As always, the event is free.

Please RSVP using our Eventbrite page. Doors open 7:00, discussion starts at 7:30.
