WSIC about Infrastructure Resiliency in a Warming Climate?

November 18, 2013 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

This past July saw record-breaking storms and massive flooding throughout Toronto, leaving many parts of the city underwater.  Whether this was an atypical weather event or indicative of more serious climate change activity, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that climate change is occurring due to anthropogenic releases of greenhouse gases.  As a result, severe weather events are expected to occur more frequently, potentially leading to devastating consequences on existing Canadian infrastructure.  What was traditionally a once in a 100 year severe weather occurrence is now striking closer to once every decade.

These changes require Canadian cities to adapt to a new environmental reality by developing more resilient infrastructure to withstand the consequences of extreme weather.  Leading our discussion on infrastructure resiliency will be Chris Fonseca, City of Mississauga Councillor, who will speak on Mississauga’s initiatives in preparing the city for more frequent storms.  She will be joined by Abe Khademi, senior associate and project manager for The Municipal Infrastructure Group Ltd., an engineering consulting firm, who will speak about the future needs of cities to ensure they are adequately protected.

Join us on Monday, November 18th at the Duke of York (39 Prince Arthur Ave), ask your questions and share your thoughts on infrastructure resiliency in a warming climate. If you just want to sit, listen, and have a drink, that’s fine too.  As always, the event is free.

Please RSVP using our Eventbrite page. Doors open 7:00, discussion starts at 7:30.

Please note this event will be filmed.
