Canada’s Future as an Arctic Nation

November 17, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The earth is undergoing global changes and Canada is at the forefront. WSIC is pleased to host professor Franklyn Griffiths of the University of Toronto to lead our discussion on the topic of “Canada’s Future as an Arctic Nation”. Prime Minister Harper is emphasizing Canada’s sovereignty over arctic lands more than ever. What will become of Canada as the arctic continues to melt?

Professor Griffiths will share with us his insights into global warming why he believes in the need to geo-engineer the earth’s climate. He will discuss how globalization of the arctic region will lead to the emergence of new security and sovereignty threats, and why we need greater collaboration among the ice states to defend against foreseeable adversity.

As the climate changes, how we view sovereignty over sensitive areas will also change. Canada will need to respond to new resource and travel opportunities once frozen lands become accessible. Much of this land belongs to the Aboriginal people and how we become responsible stewards will determine much of our future.

We look forward to your questions on November 17 at the Duke of York.

Doors open at 7:00pm. Discussion starts at 7:30pm.
